The Aurora Future Problem Solvers (FPS) has
earned an outstanding reputation, having won the Nebraska
Future Problem Solving Bowl many times and qualified and placed
at the International Future Problem Solving Conference.
Students in 5th grade have the opportunity
to participate in CmPS (Community Problem Solvers). CmPS meets
after school one day each week from 3:30-4:30 pm. Students
problem solve ways that they can help their community and
then put their plan into action. Mrs. Pawley sponsors the
5th grade CmPS group.
Fifth grade students have competed in the
Quiz Bowl program for the past several years. These students
are selected by reviewing their achievement, grades, work
habits and interest. Students receive practice materials for
use on the computer, which they use for drill and practice.
The final session is done on computers with the results sent
in for evaluation. Our students have done very well in this
competition. Miss Claire Frevert coordinates this activity.
Fourth and Fifth grade students participate
in the Geography Bee, which is held during the latter part
of the first semester. Once student is selected by competition
in each section of the two grades. They in turn compete in
front of the fourth and fifth grade students to determine
who wins the session. This has been a great activity with
very high interest among the students. All of the teachers
in grade four and five are involved in this activity with
Miss Frevert serving as coordinator.
Our students compete in the Hamilton County
Spelling Contest, which is held in February. Two fifth grade
students are selected by having a grade level spelling competition.
These students then participate at the county level.
Fifth grade students have the opportunity
to participate in band. In the fall, students work with Band
instructors Mrs. Metzer and Mr. Sodomka to select an instrument
that is best suited for them. They perform in December and
May at the Middle School Theater.
