What is identity theft?

Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in the United States.  In 2002 161,819 people reported ID theft to the Federal Trade Commission, but it is suspected that there were really about 700,000 victims.  Identity theft is when an imposter steals one's personal information.  The types of information that someone might take includes one's name, payment card, Social security number, and drivers license numbers.  Someone with this information can make purchases, open bank accounts, obtain cash, and rent an apartment in someone else's name.
